ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
Since its inception, SPC has been dedicated
to maintaining environmentally friendly products
and manufacturing processes. SPC was one
of the first companies in the coatings industry
to identify the harmful effects of VOC's
or Volatile Organic Compounds on the environment.
In addition, SPC was also the first Company
to bring a 100% solids liquid coating to
the marketplace. This innovation allows
for the absence of VOC's, or Volatile Organic
Compounds.
"VOC's are capable of producing ozone in
the lower atmosphere by reaction with nitrogen
oxides in the presence of sunlight. This
photochemical reaction results in the formation
of smog, which is often worse in the hotter
months. Releases of VOC's to air can be compared
on the basis of their potential to create
ozone relative to ethylene. Conversion to
ethylene equivalents is based on the European
Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC) "Responsible
Care HSE Reporting Guidelines" for
VOC's (1998)."
Additional environmental concerns have been
incorporated in each and every new coating
material we develop. All of SPC products
have been designed to be inert in their catalyzed
form. This insures that there is no leaching
effect from the material regardless if it
is sub-terrain or sub-sea.
In 2003, SPC launched the
ADM, Automatic Dispensing Machine for use
in the Pipeline industry. This state-of-the-art
device allows the user to mix material on
an as needed basis. This provides for amongst
other things REDUCED consumption of material
due to less material wastage on the sides
of containers. It also totally eliminates
the use of non-recyclable plastic containers.
The magnitude of this is substantial,
in this past year SPC has coated approximately
60,000 Girth welds and tie-ins with this
innovation, this in turn has saved over
120,000 non-recyclable plastic containers
and almost 6,700 cardboard boxes from our
landfills. In the development of this equipment
SPC realized that no matter how environmentally
friendly the equipment was it had to provide
benefits to the contractor, and ultimately
to the end user.
Total benefits include
saved material, less labor required per
weld, better coating performance through
ensured ratio and mix controls, further cost
savings through decreased weld coat times.
One recent pipeline construction project
estimated savings of over $100,000 USD through
the utilization of this equipment. Most importantly
it keeps plastic out of our landfills.
Specialty Polymer Coatings is now bullfrogpowered with 100% green electricity. Bullfrog’s electricity in BC comes exclusively from the Bear Mountain Wind Park which has been certified as low impact by Environment Canada under its EcoLogoM program instead of from higher impact sources like large hydro dams or fossil-fuelled generation facilities.
SPC
understands the importance of environmental
integrity. That is why we continue to
innovate new technologies that continue to
marquee our organization as the superior provider
in the industry. At SPC, innovation truly
is our specialty. |
